MERL was co-ordinator for DeFRIS (Deepwater Flowline & Riser
Insulation Systems) a three year EU 5th Framework project. The work
aimed to solve the technological needs associated with subsea pipe
insulation in future deep water and old marginal oil wells. The objectives
were to develop new materials/systems; new evaluation methods and
new software to provide an economical validated deepwater pipe and
riser insulation. Performance related testing addressed the long-term
durability of the coatings allowing accurate life-cycle prediction
with improved performance.

Experience gained from this project is now being put to use
for clients with other flowline insulation issues and includes:
Thermal conductivity
Specific heat capacity
Sea water exposure/absorpion
Ageing resistance (thermal, chemical, oxidative)
Abrasion testing of insulation materials
Simulated service testing (thermal flux measurement)
Dedicated hydrostatic creep test rigs (including HP)
