MERL innovation encompasses materials and test equipment. For example, the patented (ExxonMobil) novel seal stack design (which employed FEA methods to aid design) has been validated for HPHT sour PBR service. The MERL Bi-Phasic Single Component Elastomer (BPSCE) outperforms commercial equivalents in comparative ED testing. Many novel design approaches have been applied to measure polymer performance: these include in situ creep, sealing force, thermoplastic pipe extrusion (creep), rapid gas decompression, fatigue.
