MERL Chemical Exposure Services
MERL is able to conduct exposure tests relevant to service, including
the application of temperature (-50°C to +300°C) and pressure
(15,000 psi; 1,000 bar). Diffusion and permeation characteristics
can be
measured and changes in mechanical and physical properties monitored
as a function of exposure time. DSC is available to measure changes
in melting, glass transition and oxidative induction time where appropriate.
The study of compatibility and the effect on material properties
leads to better material selection and component design and reduces
the likelihood of component failure. Retrospective failure analysis
to determine material and/or operational changes can be undertaken.
For safety-critical applications, estimates of service life can
be made via appropriate accelerated exposure testing. This is especially
important where chemically aggressive fluids are concerned. MERL
has significant experience of testing with hostile chemicals e.g.
acids and solvents, and possesses a specialised facility to conduct
exposure testing with hydrogen sulphide ( H2S) to recreate
sour oil and gas conditions.
MERL can test to bespoke customer service requirements or Standard
methods for material qualification can be employed e.g.
NORSOK M710 (Qualification of Non-Metallic Sealing Materials and
Manufacturers)
API 6A (Specification for Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment)
API 14A (Specification for Subsurface Safety Valve Equipment)
API 17K and 17J (Specification for Bonded and Unbonded Flexible Pipe)
NACE TM0187 (Evaluating Elastomeric Materials in
Sour Gas Environments)
ASTM D471 (Standard Test Method for Rubber Property – Effect
of Liquids)
BS EN ISO 4080 (Rubber and Plastic Hoses and Hose Assemblies – Determination
of Permeability to Gas).
