Component & Product Testing
Using existing mechanical test facilities or through development
of specialist test rigs MERL mechanical testing laboratories can
perform product, component or structural testing. Tests can be performed
to specifications using data from design analysis, or new tests
specified and developed by experienced staff.
Facilities for such tests include:
Advanced servo-hydraulic test machines - control systems
can be developed in-house if the desired tests cannot be performed
on the
existing systems; test can be single or multi-axis. Multi-axial loading
allows up to three actuators to be used in conjunction to closely
simulate in-service loading.
Accelerated drop weight impact rig - maximum load ±60kN,
maximum velocity 40kph
Labview high speed data acquisition systems - tests can
be instrumented with additional load cells, LVDTs, accelerometers,
strain gauges or fibre optic devices to monitor the test data up
to failure.
Environmental test cabinets for -50°C to 220°C,
salt spray, high humidity to fit all test machines plus stand-alone
rigs can also add the effects of in-service environment. (Please
contact MERL if your temperature requirements are outside this current
range).
Products and structures tested at MERL include:
- Touch screen displays
- Medical devices - for personal use and hospital equipment
- Pressure bandages
- Aerospace primary hydraulic system drives
- Automotive steering drives
- Exhaust system mounts
- Fuel delivery system components
- Sections from inflatable dams
- Rail couplings
- Laminated rubber bearings
- Crash test dummy components
