MERL actively participate in a variety of public events to promote the research work performed within the company and help steer current research programmes, via various scientific committees.

The sixth international conference on Oilfield Engineering with Polymers will be held at the Cavendish Conference Centre in London, England, on 7 – 8th October 2008. The conference is being organised by Materials Engineering Research Laboratory Limited (MERL) in conjunction with Applied Market Information Ltd (AMI).

Elastomers, thermoplastics, thermosets and composite materials play a vital role in many critical applications in the oilfield such as coatings, insulation, pipes (bonded and flexible), hoses, seals, flexible joints and bearings, inflatable tools, umbilicals, risers, blow out preventers etc. The industry challenge is to operate safely and reliability under a wide range of operational and environmental conditions. Key to this is research and development, design, qualification and operational experience.

Industry trends include: an increasing number of sub-sea completions for deep and ultra deep water, increasing temperatures and pressures downhole, a growing market for liquid natural gas (LNG), new drilling fluids, reinjection of sour gas etc. These trends bring greater demands on the materials and components that are employed and a greater need for understanding material behaviour and limits.

This conference aims to bring together operators, contractors, equipment and component suppliers, materials suppliers and research organisations involved in the use of polymers in upstream oilfield operations.
